On August 7 West Side Barber Shop celebrated its second anniversary as a successful part of Bend’s NorthWest Crossing (NWX) community. This traditional barber shop with a unique flair has been voted runner up both years of operation for Central Oregon’s Best Barber Shop.
Travis Maxwell, the owner, dreamed about becoming a barber ever since he was a child. “Going to the barber as a kid is a memory that most men can remember,” Maxwell explained. “I wanted to have a career where I could meet all kinds of people and make lifelong friends that will bring their kids in, generation after generation. When men come into the shop, the atmosphere and smells take them back to those memories they had as a kid.”
Westside Barber Shop features vintage memorabilia of the trade. Maxwell’s collection includes an old wooden barber pole, straight razors and vintage scissors. Since he is a vintage car enthusiast, the shop has a hot rod theme. Another unique element is their partnership with Good Life Brewery to provide customers with a complimentary beer on tap. Customers can also enjoy coffee, a Rebel energy drink, the 50” flat screen TV and the younger boys can get their hair cut in a tiny 1950’s hot rod car.
Opening a shop in NorthWest Crossing “made perfect sense” to Maxwell, as it was the fastest growing residential area at the time and there were no barber shops west of the Deschutes River. The shop has grown from one barber (Maxwell) to four barbers within its two years of being open. “We are building a great relationship with the entire NorthWest Crossing community. Because of their support, we have been very successful,” Maxwell said.
