Central Oregon Locavore has officially released the summer schedule for its free, on-farm volunteer work party program, Willing Workers on Local Farms (WWOLF). Inspired by the global WWOOF movement (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) in which volunteers are connected with organic farms around the world to provide labor in exchange for housing and agricultural training, Locavore’s WWOLF program lends a hand to local farmers and ranchers while educating participants about the true nature of local food. WWOLF gathers ‘packs’ of volunteers to spend a day working on various projects in exchange for a farm-fresh meal and a day spent in the gardens, giving farmers a boost to accomplish time-sensitive, seasonal tasks.
Locavore’s first-ever WWOLF program took place back in 2010 with the entire day spent working on three neighboring farms in Prineville — Windy Acres Dairy & Creamery, Dancing Cow Farm, and Cada Dia Dairy. Locavore has since worked with 20 local farms accomplishing critical farm tasks such as transplanting starts, weeding and mulching garden beds, harvesting and gleaning produce, fixing cattle fencing, setting up greenhouses, building compost piles, and much more under the sun. If you’re a lone wolf looking for a pack to join, come out with us to your local farms and see what it takes to make local happen! Registration for WWOLF programs is free, but required. Registration is available at centraloregonlocavore.org/wwolf.
*Other tasks will be made available based on participant age and ability.
