Narcissists in the Workplace Topic of OSU-Cascades Science Pub on January 17

0

Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub on January 17 will focus on narcissists and how they tend to rise within organizations, yet are ill-suited for decision-making positions.

“Why Narcissists are Never Wrong,” will be presented by Satoris Howes, a professor of management at OSU-Cascades and a Toomey Faculty Fellow in the OSU College of Business.

The Science Pub will take place from 5:30-7:30pm at Worthy Brewing’s Eastside Brewery & Pub at 495 NE Bellevue Drive in Bend.

Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by self-absorption, exaggerated positive views of oneself and overconfidence. In her talk, Howes will explore how narcissists can attract positive attention, and also discuss how their pattern of not taking advice from others, not trusting others’ opinions and rarely thinking they are wrong is problematic in the workplace.

Howes’ research focuses on management, and industrial and organizational psychology, looking at how we can create workplaces where people can thrive and gain fulfillment. She has conducted research around performance management and feedback, as well as with employment selection, occupational health and motivation, and judgement and decision-making.

Howes is the coauthor of the best-selling industrial and organizational psychology textbook, Psychology Applied to Work.

Science Pubs are made possible with support from Worthy Brewing.

Networking and food and beverage service begin at 5:30pm, and the presentation starts at 6:30pm. Science Pubs are free to community members, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 100 guests.
