SALEM— The House unanimously passed HB 4027, which strengthens civil liability protections for volunteer health care providers.
“With a large homeless population in Central Oregon, our local nonprofits want to provide medical services but are concerned about issues in current state law,” Rep. Conger said. “HB 4027 addresses these issues and gives our nonprofits the clarity they need to help more people who need urgent health care.”
HB 4027 provides immunity from civil liability to registered volunteers with nonprofit organizations that provide services to homeless and at-risk citizens. The bill expands liability protections for medical providers in charitable organizations, and extends protections to more providers such as pharmacists and optometrists who volunteer their services.
“This important legislation provides immunity to more nonprofits and volunteer medical providers, but retains protections to patients when gross negligence occurs,” Rep. Whisnant said. “HB 4027 will help expand our local corps of volunteer health care providers and give our nonprofits the support they need to serve vulnerable citizens.”
After passing the Senate yesterday, HB 4027 now moves to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
